The Mexican army announced the killing of Nemesio Oseguera, alias El Mencho, the leader of the Jalisco Nueva Generación cartel (CJNG), in an operation carried out in Tapalpa, Jalisco state.
The U.S. offered a reward of up to 15 million dollars for his capture.
The death of El Mencho represents a significant blow to drug trafficking, similar to the arrest of the founders of the Sinaloa cartel. Following the announcement of his death, gang members reacted violently, blocking roads and setting vehicles on fire in several states, including Jalisco and Michoacán.
The CJNG cartel, formed in 2009, is considered one of the most violent in Mexico and has been designated by the U.S. as a terrorist organization, being accused of trafficking various drugs, including cocaine and fentanyl.
