The European Commission (EC) has announced its intention to tighten the registration conditions for drones, in response to a series of mysterious drone incidents in Europe in 2025.
Commissioner Magnus Brunner emphasized that the EU has been too slow to respond to the threats posed by drones, which can be used as weapons. The proposed Action Plan aims to strengthen national security measures, including improving drone registration, with the goal of creating a common database. The weight threshold for registration will be reduced from 250 to 100 grams, facilitating the identification of operators.
The EC will also implement advanced technologies, such as artificial intelligence and 5G telecommunications, to enhance the monitoring of drone flights.
A budget of approximately 250 million euros will be allocated to support the production of drones and anti-drone systems, and 150 million euros will be allocated to the FRONTEX Agency to strengthen aerial surveillance at the Union's borders.
