According to the National Bureau of Statistics of China, the birth rate dropped in 2025 to 5.63 births per 1,000 inhabitants, the lowest level since records began in 1949. This represents a continuation of the population decline, which has decreased for the fourth consecutive year, with only 7.92 million births in 2025. China is facing an accelerated aging of its population, and authorities are trying to encourage marriage and childbirth through subsidies for childcare and other measures, including taxing condoms.
Although the one-child policy was abandoned ten years ago, the birth rate has continued to decline, with a previous low of 6.39 births per thousand inhabitants in 2023. Additionally, the number of marriages has reached a historically low level, and the costs of education and career priorities discourage young couples from having children. UN projections suggest that China's population could decrease to 633 million by 2100.
