A powerful explosion shook the Ta' Lourdes fireworks factory in Magħtab on Monday morning, around 6:30 AM, slightly injuring two men, aged 67 and 47, from St Paul's Bay. They were near the factory and were transported to Mater Dei Hospital by ambulance, having sustained minor injuries and suffering from shock.
The police confirmed that no factory employees were on site at the time of the incident. The explosion, heard from several kilometers away, caused significant damage, including broken windows and shaken buildings.
Witnesses described the experience as terrifying, with some initially believing it was a gas explosion. Emergency services, including the police and the Civil Protection Department, quickly responded to secure the area.
Political leaders, including Prime Minister Robert Abela and European Parliament President Roberta Metsola, expressed concern and solidarity with those affected, praising the swift response of the authorities. The investigation is being led by magistrate Joe Mifsud.
