The South Korean army announced on Monday that it has officially proposed negotiations with North Korea to clarify the military demarcation line between the two countries. Kim Hong-cheol, the Deputy Minister of Defense of South Korea, emphasized that the purpose of these negotiations is to avoid accidental clashes and to reduce military tension. The incursions of North Korean soldiers into the southern part of the demilitarized zone have been mentioned as a problem, as they establish tactical routes and lay mines.
South Korean troops have been forced to issue warnings and fire warning shots to compel the North Koreans to withdraw. Kim explained that these issues have arisen due to the loss of markers of the demarcation line, established by the 1953 armistice agreement, which ended the war from 1950-1953, but without signing a peace treaty, leaving the two countries in a state of technical war.
