The South Korean President Lee Jae Myung requested, in a speech delivered on the anniversary of Korea's liberation from Japanese rule, the resumption of dialogue with North Korea to build a peaceful coexistence relationship.
Lee emphasized the need to replace the armistice that ended the Korean War (1950-1953) with a formal peace regime. He proposed negotiations to overcome the current situation and suggested measures to limit North Korea's nuclear capabilities. Despite his appeals, relations between the two Koreas remain tense, with Kim Jong Un rejecting dialogue offers and considering South Korea an enemy.
Lee also addressed relations with Japan, expressing a desire to build a common future despite historical issues. The President promised measures to reduce tensions and protection against military escalation.
