American President Donald Trump announced on Wednesday, in front of reporters, that he plans to meet with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un later this year.

Although he did not provide further details, Trump confirmed that he expects to see Kim, emphasizing that a good relationship with him is beneficial.

North Korea possesses a significant nuclear arsenal, and Trump mentioned that, as president, he would not have allowed the accumulation of these weapons:

“The fact that I get along well with him – that’s a good thing, not a bad thing. He has 57 very powerful nuclear weapons. He should never have been allowed to have that. If I had been president, I would not have allowed that. But he has them.”

Estimates regarding the number of nuclear warheads held by Pyongyang vary, but a recent report suggests that it could have around 60.

Trump's comments come in the context of his request to reduce joint military exercises with South Korea. However, Kim's sister, Kim Yo-jong, stated that she is not aware of these communications and emphasized that, although the relationship between Trump and Kim is good, the United States remains an enemy for Pyongyang.

Trump and Kim have previously met three times, in 2018 and 2019.
