South Korea has received approval from U.S. President Donald Trump to develop nuclear-powered submarines, thus becoming the fourth country in the world with this capability. This strategic move will allow Seoul to more effectively counter threats from North Korea and China, while simultaneously freeing up American submarines for other hot zones, such as the South China Sea. Nuclear submarines offer significant advantages, such as the ability to remain submerged for extended periods and superior speed compared to conventional ones. However, South Korea faces restrictions related to the reprocessing of nuclear fuel, but recently, President Lee Jae Myung has requested the lifting of this ban, receiving a favorable response from Trump. This development could transform South Korea's role in the alliance with the U.S., enhancing the region's security capabilities.
