The Vasil Levski International Airport in Sofia will temporarily suspend operations for civil traffic on the mornings of February 23 and 24, between 01:15-02:50 GMT and 01:05-03:35 GMT.
During these intervals, only emergency landings and military flights will be allowed, in the context of the presence of new tanker aircraft from the U.S. Air Force. Although commercial flights are not usually scheduled during these hours, the Bulgarian press has speculated that the suspension could be related to military transports to the Middle East and the tensions between Washington and Tehran. However, a representative of the airport stated that the temporary closure is due to repair work on the runway, mentioning that it is not related to American aircraft or the geopolitical situation. The closure of the airport at night for military activities is often associated with exercises or sensitive operations.
