Bulgaria is temporarily restricting road traffic on the Giurgiu–Ruse Friendship Bridge during two periods in October for work to install expansion joints. The measure will apply from October 19 at 09:00 to October 22 at 17:00, and from October 26 at 09:00 to October 29 at 17:00.
During the first stage, the right-hand lane will be closed to traffic, and vehicles will travel alternately in both directions on the left-hand lane. During the second stage, work will be carried out on the left-hand lane, while vehicles will travel alternately on the right-hand lane. The direction of traffic will change at intervals of approximately 20 minutes.
The Bucharest Regional Directorate of Roads and Bridges recommends that drivers exercise caution and comply with temporary road signs. The authorities have not announced a complete closure of the bridge, but the restrictions may cause delays and longer waiting times at the border crossing.
The measures have been announced amid discussions regarding the toll for crossing the bridge. As of October 1, Romania has eliminated the toll for travel from Giurgiu to Ruse. In the opposite direction, from Bulgaria to Romania, the toll remains in effect. Several Bulgarian lawmakers have asked the government in Sofia to clarify whether it intends to eliminate this toll as well.
