Romania eliminates the Giurgiu-Ruse bridge toll and asks Bulgaria to do the same

Romania will eliminate, starting October 1, the crossing toll for the bridge over the Danube in the Giurgiu–Ruse direction, with the measure expected to facilitate and ease traffic between the two countries.

State Secretary at the Ministry of Transport and Infrastructure Horațiu Cosma told Bulgaria’s BTA news agency that the Romanian authorities had notified the government in Sofia and asked it, in turn, to waive the toll for crossings in the Ruse–Giurgiu direction.

According to the Romanian official, the bilateral treaties currently in force allow the transit regime to be modified without concluding a new agreement between the two states. Romania maintains that eliminating the tolls would help reduce waiting times and ease traffic on one of the main road links between Romania and Bulgaria.

The decision is part of a broader plan announced by Transport Minister Radu Miruță. From October 1, drivers will be able to cross three major bridges over the Danube free of charge: Giurgiu–Ruse, Fetești–Cernavodă, on the A2 motorway, and Giurgiu–Vadu Oii, which connects Muntenia with Dobrogea. The toll eliminations apply to the directions administered by Romania.
