Bulgaria is calling for the removal of the bridge toll for crossing the Danube between Giurgiu and Ruse, after Romania waived, as of October 1, the fee charged for crossing in the direction from Romania to Bulgaria. The Romanian measure aims to reduce vehicle queues at the border crossing point and ease traffic on the Friendship Bridge.
In the opposite direction, from Bulgaria to Romania, the bridge toll remains in place for the time being. Romania’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs officially informed the Bulgarian authorities about the removal of the fee and expressed its conviction that Sofia would adopt a similar measure.
The issue was also raised by three Bulgarian MPs from the We Continue the Change – Democratic Bulgaria coalition. Nadezhda Yordanova, Martin Dimitrov, and Lyuben Ivanov are requesting explanations regarding the intentions of the authorities in Sofia and when the toll could be removed.
The MPs are awaiting responses from the Bulgarian ministers of Regional Development, Finance, and Transport. Removing the toll in both directions could contribute to normalizing traffic and supporting economic and tourism exchanges between Romania and Bulgaria.
