Bulgaria wants the construction of two new bridges over the Danube / Sofia is waiting for a stable government to be installed in Bucharest in order to open negotiations

Bulgaria will begin negotiations with Romania on the construction of two more bridges over the Danube as soon as a stable government is formed in Bucharest, Bulgarian Transport Minister Gheorghi Peev announced during a hearing before the relevant parliamentary committee.

The minister said that developing transport connectivity is one of Bulgaria’s main priorities, alongside the projects at Kresna and improving infrastructure on the northern border. Sofia is also holding talks with the European commissioner for transport, who is due to visit Bulgaria.

Bulgarian authorities are working to identify strategic locations for future projects, including along Corridor VIII. An interministerial group established by order of Prime Minister Radev brings together experts in regional development and the environment, while the program is expected to be officially presented in the coming period.

At the same time, Bulgaria is seeking to protect European funding for railway projects and avoid losing the funds. The minister cited the lack of long-term planning as one of the major problems facing the national infrastructure. The hearing’s agenda also included the renovation of the Asparuh Bridge in Varna, reform of road traffic control, and monitoring nautical activities along the Black Sea coast.
