Researchers Jeffrey Lewis and Decker Eveleth used satellite images to identify evidence of the deployment of hypersonic ballistic missiles Oreshnik in Belarus, at a former airbase near the city of Krichev. This move could allow Russia to expand its strike capability against European countries, having a range of 5,500 km.
Russian President Vladimir Putin has expressed the intention to deploy these missiles, and researchers estimate a 90% probability that the site will host mobile launchers. The Oreshnik missiles, which are said to be impossible to intercept, were used for the first time in November 2024, without a nuclear warhead, in Ukraine. This deployment occurs before the expiration of the New START treaty, which limits nuclear arsenals, and marks the first placement of Russian nuclear weapons outside national territory since the Cold War.
Belarusian leader Alexander Lukashenko confirmed that the first missiles have already been deployed, but further details remain unclear.
