On October 12, 2022, Polish Air Force F-16 and MIG-29 fighter jets participated in a NATO exercise in Poland. The Polish Minister of Defense, Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz, emphasized the need to accelerate defense measures for NATO's eastern flank, following a recent incursion of a Russian drone into Romanian airspace. Romania mobilized fighter jets to respond to the challenge, and NATO pilots were close to shooting down the drone but refrained due to ground risks.
Russian drones attacked Ukrainian ports, and the incursion into Romania was the deepest and the first during the day, reported since the beginning of the Russian invasion in 2022. The Romanian Ministry of Defense deployed Eurofighter and F-16 aircraft to track the drone, and residents in the affected counties were warned to take shelter. Romania has a 650 km border with Ukraine, making the strengthening of security in the area necessary.
