The countries on NATO's eastern flank, including Poland and Romania, are installing the American Merops defense system, designed to counter the threats posed by Russian drones. This system, which has demonstrated effectiveness in Ukraine, uses artificial intelligence to identify and shoot down drones, providing commanders with time to assess the threat.
Merops can protect critical targets, such as airports, and military units in motion. Recently, NATO responded to Russian drone attacks, and incidents involving unidentified drones have led to the closure of airports in several European countries. In this context, Poland is developing its own defense system, prioritizing national solutions in discussions for a "drone shield" within the European Union.
