Beginning in the fall of 2022, Belarus implemented price controls on commodities, including potatoes, to combat inflation. These measures led to a drop in potato production from over 4 million tons in 2023 to 3.1 million tons in 2024, affecting supplies. Price caps have reduced profitability and exports to Russia have increased due to higher prices. In December 2024, the authorities restricted potato exports and in May 2025 adjusted prices to boost domestic supplies. Lukashenko's opponents accuse him of distorting the economy through these controls.
