India, the second largest wheat producer in the world, announced on Monday the lifting of restrictions on wheat exports, a decision that could help improve global supply, affected by the conflict between Russia and Ukraine, according to Bloomberg cited by Agerpres.
The Indian authorities halted wheat exports in July 2022, partially resuming them at the beginning of this year, with a limit of five million tons per year. According to notifications issued by the General Directorate of Foreign Trade, India will now allow exports of wheat, flour, and other related products.
This decision could reduce pressures on countries that depend on imports from Asia, Africa, and the Middle East, in the context of intensified attacks on commercial vessels in the Black Sea, which have disrupted grain deliveries from Russia and Ukraine.
The last wheat harvest in India reached a record level of 120.6 million tons, but previous restrictions were imposed for food security reasons.
