Only 33% of registered voters in the United States approve of Donald Trump’s performance as president, less than two months before the November midterm elections, according to a Focaldata poll conducted for the Financial Times.
It is the lowest level recorded since May and three percentage points below the figure from the previous month. Support among Republicans fell to 72%, a historic low in the cited polls.
The economy is the main issue for the Trump administration. Nearly two-thirds of voters believe the economy is heading in the wrong direction, while 57% say their financial situation has worsened during the presidential term.
Among Republicans, only 53% approve of the president’s economic and employment policies, nearly eight points lower than the previous month.
At the same time, 56% of voters oppose the 50% tariff imposed on Canadian goods, a measure that prompted Ottawa to adopt retaliatory tariffs and heightened fears of rising prices.
The poll also points to electoral risks for Republicans: 46% of voters believe that Trump’s involvement makes it harder for the party to win control of Congress, while 47% of independents say they would be less likely to vote for a candidate endorsed by him.
The research was conducted between August 28 and September 1, among a sample of 1,914 voters, with a margin of error of 2.6%.
