U.S. Republican President Donald Trump said Monday in Washington that the midterm elections scheduled for Tuesday are “the most important” in Americans’ lives. He made the statement on the final day of campaigning, in an effort to mobilize his voters ahead of a ballot in which Democrats hope to regain control of Congress.
In a speech delivered in front of the Abraham Lincoln Memorial, Trump highlighted projects promoted by his administration during his second term and harshly attacked Democratic candidates. He claimed, without providing evidence, that the Democratic Party had nominated the most “radical and dangerous” candidates in U.S. history, including alleged ties to extremist organizations.
Trump has been heavily involved in the campaign and has attended 25 rallies, particularly in traditionally Republican states such as Texas, Iowa and Kansas, where Democrats hope to secure victories.
According to polls, the rising cost of living and the economic effects of the war against Iran have reduced the president’s popularity. Republicans risk losing their narrow majority in the House of Representatives and possibly control of the Senate. In the event of a defeat, Trump said he might preemptively pardon allies targeted by congressional investigations. The election will renew all 435 seats in the House of Representatives and one-third of the Senate seats.
