In Tanzania, over 250 people have been charged with 'treason' and 'conspiracy to commit treason', following violent protests that occurred after the recent elections. These charges are related to attempts to obstruct the presidential and legislative elections in 2025.
On Friday, hundreds of defendants were brought before the court in Dar-es-Salaam. The opposition party Chadema reported the arrest of its deputy secretary general, Amani Golugwa, leaving only three of the six party leaders free. The protests, which erupted spontaneously on October 29, were violently suppressed, with an estimated death toll of at least 800 according to Chadema.
President Samia Suluhu Hassan won the election with 98%, but its credibility has been challenged by international observers. Authorities have refused to provide an official death toll, while information about the crackdown has begun to surface on social media.
