The Maldives has adopted a historic ban, prohibiting smoking for all individuals born after January 1, 2007, including tourists. This measure, aimed at protecting public health, recently came into effect and can attract fines of up to $3,200 for those who do not comply.
According to the Ministry of Health, the Maldives becomes the first country in the world with a generational smoking ban.
In 2021, over a quarter of the adult population in the Maldives smoked, and the rate was even higher among adolescents. Although other countries, such as New Zealand and the United Kingdom, have discussed similar measures, they have not been implemented. Additionally, the government of the Maldives plans to establish anti-smoking clinics to help the population quit tobacco.
