Spain has taken an important step in its strategy to reduce tobacco consumption by approving a bill that updates the regulations from 2005. The Council of Ministers has adapted the legislation to new consumption habits and emerging products, such as electronic cigarettes and hookahs.
The objective of the Ministry of Health is to increase the number of smoke-free areas and to protect children and adolescents. The project provides for a ban on smoking in public areas, including on restaurant terraces and in national parks, and introduces a ban on tobacco consumption by individuals under 18 years old. Additionally, electronic cigarettes will be subject to the same regulations as conventional cigarettes.
The law will restrict the advertising and promotion of tobacco products, including in the media. Penalties for violating the new regulations will range from 200 to 600,000 euros, and minors may face fines or community service.
This reform comes in the context of smoking causing approximately 50,000 deaths annually in Spain.
