The royal house of Liechtenstein announced on Saturday that the rules of succession will be modified, allowing a woman to inherit the throne of the principality in the future.
Hereditary Prince Alois made this announcement in his speech on the national day, stating that the modification was approved by a two-thirds majority of the voting family members. The new rule will change the order of succession from male primogeniture to absolute primogeniture, so that the firstborn, regardless of sex, will become the heir. The change will only apply to the descendants of Alois and his wife, Hereditary Princess Sophie, born in the future. Although Prince Hans-Adam II remains the head of state, his powers were ceded to Alois in 2004. Liechtenstein, a country with a strong monarchy, was the last in Europe to grant women the right to vote in 1984.
