Liechtenstein suffered a cyber attack on the night of July 29 to 30, when unknown perpetrators gained illegal access to the Register of Beneficial Economic Owners, stealing data from approximately 31,000 legal entities. This register, created in April 2021, aims to combat money laundering and the financing of terrorism by recording the individuals who effectively control companies, foundations, and trusts in the principality. Irregularities were detected by the Justice Office on Thursday, and the register was taken offline immediately.

The government was informed on Friday and received the first results of the investigation on Saturday. Following the incident, a crisis cell was established, led by the head of government Brigitte Haas and the Minister of Justice Emanuel Schädler, tasked with clarifying the situation as quickly as possible and implementing security measures.
