The families of the victims of the shooting attack in Tumbler Ridge have filed lawsuits against OpenAI, accusing the company and CEO Sam Altman of negligence and complicity in the attack carried out by Jesse Van Rootselaar, who is 18 years old. Court documents filed state that OpenAI employees flagged the attacker's account eight months before the incident, considering it a credible threat of violence.

However, OpenAI decided not to inform Canadian authorities, but to deactivate the attacker's account. On February 10, Van Rootselaar entered a school in Tumbler Ridge, killing six people and injuring another 27, before taking his own life.

The plaintiffs claim that OpenAI's decision not to alert the police led to the devastation of the community. OpenAI stated that it has improved safety measures, but the victims' lawyers assert that this is the first series of lawsuits against the company in connection with the attack. Sam Altman apologized to the community, acknowledging the losses suffered.
