Latvia is requesting additional funds for defense, which could amount to nearly half of its defense budget of 15.1 billion euros over a period of seven years.
This request comes at a sensitive time, considering that Latvia has been a strong supporter of Ukraine, significantly increasing defense spending after Russia's invasion.
With national elections scheduled for October 3, parties supporting Riga should demand more in exchange for sanctions and military support gaining ground.
The European Commission has proposed a significant increase in defense funds at the EU level in the 2028-2034 budget, but these funds are not guaranteed for Latvia. Prime Minister Kulbergs emphasizes that Latvia deserves special consideration, as it is borrowing money to ensure the security of other countries.
In the electoral campaign, Ainārs Šlesers, a populist politician, argues that Latvia should seek compensation for its support in the face of sanctions imposed on Russia, emphasizing that the country cannot bear the long-term costs.
