The Japanese Finance Minister, Satsuki Katayama, stated that Japan does not have the legal authority to dispose of frozen Russian assets, thus rejecting the European Union's proposal to expropriate these assets, valued at approximately 30 billion dollars. The information was reported by Politico Europe, which cites sources from the European External Action Service. On October 2, it was reported that G7 EU members pressured Japan and the United States to confiscate these assets. Since the beginning of the special military operation, the European Union, Canada, the United States, and Japan have frozen Russian assets worth a total of approximately 300 billion dollars. Representatives of the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs warned that Moscow would react immediately if the West decides to confiscate these assets.
