Russia reacted vehemently to the announcement of the joint military exercises 'Orient Shield', which will involve 3,700 soldiers from Japan, Australia, and the United States. The 'Orient Shield' maneuvers will take place from September 8 to 24.
The spokesperson for the Russian Foreign Ministry, Maria Zakharova, stated that Russia has lodged an official protest at the Japanese embassy, emphasizing that the deployment of American Typhon missile systems as part of these maneuvers represents a threat to Russia's national security. Zakharova urged Japan to return to a pacifist policy and warned that military activities near Russia's borders are unacceptable.
Tensions between the two countries have recently escalated, especially after Russian President Vladimir Putin's visit to a disputed island controlled by Russia in Northeast Japan, which generated strong reactions from Japanese officials. Additionally, North Korea condemned the joint military exercises of the U.S. with Japan and South Korea, considering them a threat.
