Jakarta, the capital of Indonesia, has been designated the largest city in the world, with a population of 41.9 million inhabitants, according to the UN World Urbanization Prospects 2025 report. This has dethroned Tokyo, which has dropped to third place with 33.4 million inhabitants, following Dhaka, Bangladesh, which has risen to 36.6 million.
The report highlights that Asia hosts the majority of metropolises, with 19 of the 33 cities having over 10 million inhabitants. Jakarta faces issues related to rising sea levels and flooding, which has prompted the Indonesian government to build a new capital in Nusantara. The city also faces social inequalities and accessibility issues, which have led to recent protests.
