Indonesian authorities suspended flights in Jakarta after the eruption of the Anak Krakatoa volcano

Indonesian authorities suspended operations at Jakarta’s Soekarno-Hatta International Airport on Sunday after volcanic ash from Anak Krakatoa volcano was detected in the airspace over the area. The measure was taken to protect air traffic and passengers.

According to AFP, tests indicated the “dispersion of volcanic ash in the area of Soekarno-Hatta International Airport.” Following the checks, Indonesia’s Ministry of Transport announced that the airport would be closed until Sunday at 09:30 local time.

Anak Krakatoa is located more than 150 kilometers from Indonesia’s capital. The volcano, formed in the area of the former Krakatoa, is being monitored by authorities because of its activity and the risks volcanic ash can pose to aircraft. Ash can affect aircraft engines, visibility, and the operation of onboard systems, which is why airports may be temporarily closed when particles are detected near flight routes.

Authorities will assess atmospheric conditions before resuming operations.
