MAE announces the suspension of flights to Catania until Sunday, following the reactivation of Mount Etna

Air traffic at Catania–Fontanarossa International Airport has been suspended until Sunday, September 27, 2026, at 12:00 p.m., following the reawakening of Mount Etna, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs reports. The measure concerns Romanians who are in, transiting through, or planning to travel to Sicily, in the area of the city of Catania.

The MFA advises travelers to check the situation before departure, follow the instructions of the Italian authorities, and avoid travel and excursions in the volcano area. Updated information is published by Italy’s Civil Protection Department and the authorities of the Sicily region.

Romanian citizens can request consular assistance from the Consulate of Romania in Catania at +39 095 537 909 and +39 095 536 139. In difficult situations or emergencies, the telephone lines of the Romanian consulates in Rome, Milan, Bologna, Turin, Trieste, and Bari are also available.

The Ministry recommends consulting the consular websites and using the “Travel Informed” app, which provides alerts and recommendations for Romanians abroad.
