Iran is awaiting the United States’ response after new indirect talks held Monday in New York through Qatari mediators, aimed at finding a solution to end the war in the Middle East and allow, as a first step, the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz.
Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said that mediators from Qatar had presented several ideas, which were discussed with the Iranian side. They are expected to resume negotiations with U.S. officials, and Washington’s response will subsequently be conveyed to Tehran through the Qatari mediator.
According to Araghchi, the discussions are currently focused exclusively on the Strait of Hormuz. Its reopening is conditional on compliance with requirements already communicated to the United States. Qatar estimates that the American response could arrive on Tuesday, after which Iranian authorities will decide on the next steps.
Iran had previously proposed reopening the strait within seven days in exchange for the lifting of the U.S. naval blockade on Iranian ports, the suspension of sanctions on oil, and the restoration of the ceasefire. President Donald Trump rejected the proposal.
The conflict between Iran, on the one hand, and the United States and Israel, on the other, has entered its eighth month. A provisional agreement signed in June temporarily allowed the strait to reopen, but the understanding collapsed before negotiations on a final agreement concerning sanctions and Iran’s nuclear program.
