Iran is prepared to reopen the Strait of Hormuz within seven days if the United States eases military pressure and lifts the blockade of Iranian ports, a senior Iranian official told Reuters. It is unclear how the reopening would be implemented, and Washington has not commented on the information.
The official also said that the Iranian delegation attending the UN General Assembly has full authority to resume negotiations with American representatives. The comments come as Tehran and Washington have exchanged threats, while President Donald Trump has said he is open to meeting his Iranian counterpart, Masoud Pezeshkian.
Traffic through the strait, one of the most important routes for oil shipments, has fallen significantly. Only 17 commercial vessels crossed the area over the weekend, compared with 37 the previous week and approximately 120 per day before the war. Some tankers continue to transport oil with their transponders switched off to avoid detection.
Despite the decline in traffic, oil prices fell for a fourth consecutive session amid hopes that diplomacy will resume. Iran had previously demanded, as conditions for reopening the strait, an end to the conflict on all fronts and the unfreezing of Iranian funds.
