Iran insisted on a diplomatic solution to the conflict with the United States and Israel on Sunday, after U.S. President Donald Trump said he had rejected Tehran’s proposal regarding the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz and an end to the fighting.
Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi said that reopening the strait depends on meeting clear conditions and that only negotiations can get the parties out of the deadlock. He specified that Iran is awaiting the official position of the United States, conveyed through the mediators involved in the talks.
The peace proposal was presented at the beginning of the week, at the UN General Assembly in New York, and conveyed to the U.S. administration through mediators from Qatar. Under the plan, the United States would have had to meet certain conditions within seven days to resume negotiations and reopen the strait.
Trump stated that Iran wants an agreement because the losses caused by the closure of the main waterway are very large.
However, Araqchi maintains that the mediators have not officially communicated the American rejection. Previously, a U.S. official had described the indirect talks as “positive and constructive”.
