U.S. President Donald Trump reportedly rejected Iran’s proposal to reopen the Strait of Hormuz within seven days, according to information cited by the British press. The offer was reportedly conveyed to Washington through intermediaries from Qatar during the United Nations General Assembly in New York.

The plan presented by Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi called for the resumption of negotiations on Tehran’s nuclear program and the gradual return of shipping to normal. In return, Iran requested the lifting of the U.S. naval blockade, the dropping of sanctions on oil exports, and respect for a ceasefire that would also include Lebanon.

The Independent, citing The Wall Street Journal and unnamed U.S. officials, claims that Trump is skeptical about Iran honoring its commitments and considers a resumption of bombing possible. The information has not been confirmed by an official announcement from the U.S. president.

Meanwhile, a U.S. official quoted by Reuters described the indirect discussions as “positive and constructive.” Trump nevertheless reiterated that the United States would not accept Iran obtaining a nuclear weapon.

The Strait of Hormuz is a strategic route for global energy transport, and blocking traffic can affect supplies and international oil prices.
