Germany and Italy are proposing to collaborate more closely in managing migration, following recent disagreements regarding the return of migrants. Italian Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani announced that, following a phone conversation with his German counterpart Johann Wadephul, discussions are focused on ensuring the protection of Europe's external borders.
Although both parties recognize the importance of this issue, the situation of asylum seekers who entered the European Union through Italy and wish to be returned to this country of Germany remains unclear. The Italian government, led by Giorgia Meloni, has so far refused to accept these migrants, citing an overwhelmed reception system.
Additionally, Italian Interior Minister Matteo Piantedosi mentioned that Italy has received 2,200 migrants since the beginning of the year, and discussions between Italian and German officials are expected in the coming days to address these issues.
