George Robertson, former Secretary General of NATO, recently participated in events dedicated to the 80th anniversary of the founding of the UN. He emphasized that, although NATO is stronger due to the increased number of members, there are concerns regarding the adherence to fundamental principles of collective defense. Robertson commented on President Trump's threats regarding Greenland, considering them more of a negotiation tactic than a military reality. He highlighted the importance of the Arctic for security, given Russia's aggression and China's aspirations in the region.
He also underscored cyberattacks and disinformation as current challenges for the West. Robertson insisted on the need for NATO to increase defense budgets, with a commitment of 5% of GDP by 2035, to ensure security. He expressed optimism about NATO's future, anticipating an expansion of the Alliance in the coming years, mentioning that the accession of Sweden and Finland was accelerated by Putin's actions.
