Germany will send four Eurofighter fighter jets to Latvia to help secure the country’s airspace during the parliamentary elections on October 3. The aircraft will be deployed at the request of the government in Riga, amid frequent incursions by Russian drones and diverted Ukrainian drones in the Baltic Sea region.

The jets will take part in NATO’s air-policing mission in the region and will be stationed for approximately one week at Lielvārde Air Base in central Latvia. Germany will also send a contingent of several dozen military personnel. The operation is planned to run from late September until early October.

The German Ministry of Defence said Berlin remains alongside allies considered particularly exposed on NATO’s eastern flank. The mission comes amid intensifying air activity and drone incidents near the Baltic states.

Germany has also scheduled a larger contribution to NATO’s air-policing mission in the region. At the end of the year, the German Air Force is expected to send five Eurofighter jets and approximately 120 military personnel to Amari Air Base in Estonia, where they will remain until March 2027.
