The NATO Secretary General, Mark Rutte, addressed the current dispute regarding defense spending, mentioning that the NATO summit in Ankara, scheduled for early next month, will discuss spending commitments. Rutte emphasized that countries need to have a "credible path" to spend 5% of GDP on defense by 2035.

In the United Kingdom, the resignation of Defense Minister John Healey highlighted delays in military investment plans, with spending estimates of only 2.68% of GDP by 2030. Rutte stated that, despite the differences between countries, NATO is making progress in achieving defense objectives.

He emphasized the importance of meeting commitments in the face of Russian threats and highlighted the need for close collaboration between the U.S. and Europe. The summit takes place against a backdrop of international tensions, including criticism from U.S. President Donald Trump regarding allies' commitments. Rutte stressed that debates are normal in democracies and reaffirmed the importance of the NATO alliance for global security.
