Kelemen Hunor says that he did not put himself forward for the position of prime minister: “Anyone who says otherwise is shamelessly lying. Beware of conspiracy theories.”

UDMR President Kelemen Hunor denied on Wednesday that he had nominated himself for the position of prime minister, one day before consultations convened by President Nicușor Dan at Cotroceni Palace. The UDMR leader said that any contrary claim was a lie and accused others of spreading false information in the public sphere.

“I did not nominate myself for prime minister in any context. Anyone who says otherwise is shamelessly lying,” Kelemen Hunor wrote on Facebook. He said that whenever his name had been mentioned for the position, he had rejected the option and explained his position.

The UDMR leader said Romania needs a fully empowered government and recalled that his party had proposed several political formulas, including coalitions, minority governments, technocratic or transitional governments, and independent prime ministers. Kelemen Hunor said the UDMR had not caused the current political deadlock and that the outcome of the negotiations would not depend on his party.

The consultations at Cotroceni Palace are scheduled for Thursday to designate a prime minister. The names being discussed include Sorin Grindeanu, Alexandru Nazare and Siegfried Mureșan.
