The FBI Director, Kash Patel, was subjected to an intense interrogation in Congress, where he denied allegations of excessive alcohol consumption and unexplained absences from work, calling them unfounded. These allegations, initially reported by Atlantic magazine, were described by Democrats as extremely alarming and a potential dereliction of duty.
Patel filed a defamation lawsuit against the magazine, seeking $250 million in damages. During the hearing, he dismissed the allegations, stating that they are false and challenged Senator Chris Van Hollen to take a breathalyzer test with him. Patel attempted to turn the allegations against Van Hollen, but the senator's office explained that the mentioned expenses were for a holiday reception, not for alcohol consumption.
The Atlantic cited sources claiming that Patel's behavior was a source of concern in the government, including incidents where his security team had difficulties waking him up. Patel denied all allegations and stated that he did not use FBI resources to investigate negative press about him.
