A former FBI agent, Patrick Steven Yaroch, with 'Top Secret' clearance, admitted to investigators that he illegally accessed FBI systems to obtain access keys and transfer funds into his personal digital wallets.
Frustrated by the FBI's inability to confiscate the digital assets of adversarial entities, Yaroch decided to act on his own, making unauthorized transfers approximately 10-12 times. The investigation revealed that he was preparing to flee to Portugal, using an artificial intelligence platform to research moving nearly one million dollars into the European Union. Yaroch obtained a power of attorney from lawyers in Lisbon and booked a family trip.
He also violated security protocols by making unreported trips to Germany and Grenada. His schemes were discovered on July 29, when he confessed his actions to an employee of the Department of Justice. After a search of his residence, he voluntarily returned $925,426.07 and was charged with interstate transportation and possession of stolen goods. Yaroch was placed on administrative leave on July 29, and his relations with the FBI were terminated on July 31.
