According to the Spanish press, the government of Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez has redirected significant amounts from European Union funds towards the social assistance system. Over 10 billion euros, initially intended to combat the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic, have been used to cover budget deficits, according to the newspaper 'El Mundo'. Among these amounts, 2.39 billion euros have been allocated to the public servants' pension fund and the minimum pension fund of social insurance, confirmed by the Ministry of Finance. In the following year, another 8.5 billion euros, intended for industrial transformation, have been transferred to social insurance.
The European Taxpayers' Federation has denounced these actions as a 'scandal of utmost importance', demanding clarifications and the recovery of funds. These diversions have sparked controversy, considering that the European Recovery Fund 'NextGenerationEU' was created to support economic resilience and sustainable growth following the crisis.
