Cyclosporiasis, a parasitic infection that causes explosive diarrhea, has infected nearly 7,000 people in 34 states across the U.S., according to the CDC.
Identifying the source of the outbreak has proven to be a challenge for public health experts, partly due to the difficulty in detecting the parasite and the incubation period of up to two weeks. Michigan is the most affected state, with over 3,300 cases.
Budget cuts applied to public health agencies have further complicated investigations, limiting the capacity to monitor foodborne illnesses. Despite efforts to test and interview infected individuals, identifying sources of contamination remains a challenge.
Authorities recommend thoroughly washing vegetables and avoiding certain fruits to prevent infections.
