Health authorities in the state of Michigan have confirmed that two deaths are associated with an outbreak of cyclosporiasis, a parasitic infection that has caused severe diarrhea cases in several states across the U.S.

According to the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services, these are the first known deaths associated with this outbreak, and both individuals had serious pre-existing medical conditions that may have been exacerbated by the infection and dehydration.

Cyclosporiasis, caused by the parasite Cyclospora cayetanensis, can contaminate food or water and can cause severe diarrhea. Although the infection is not commonly fatal, dehydration caused by persistent diarrhea can lead to serious complications. This season, the CDC has reported over 18,000 cases of cyclosporiasis in the U.S., with a significant number of confirmed cases.

Authorities are investigating multiple outbreaks, including one extensive in the Midwest, and have recalled Iceberg lettuce from Taylor Farms, suspected of contamination.
