On Wednesday, a major blackout hit the western part of Cuba, leaving millions of people in Havana and other areas without electricity. The Electric Union confirmed the incident on the social platform X, mentioning that the outage affected areas from Pinar del Rio to Camaguey. Teams are mobilized to restore power.
This is the second blackout in the last three months affecting the western region of Cuba, and the exact cause of the outage is unclear. Cuba is facing declining oil reserves, following the U.S. attack on Venezuela in January, which halted essential oil deliveries. Additionally, last month, the Cuban government implemented austerity measures to save fuel, warning that fuel for planes will not be available in new airports until March. The island is already facing a deteriorated electrical grid and generation deficits.
