Colombia, affected by a war of over 50 years against drugs, has authorized the sale of cannabis flowers in pharmacies for medical use through a decree from the Ministry of Health. This decision follows the legalization of cannabis use for therapeutic purposes in 2016 and the export of dried flowers in 2021. Although cannabis was cultivated, local sales were blocked by a legal void. With the new decree, licensed pharmacies and veterinary clinics can sell cannabis flowers with THC, but consumers must present a medical prescription. The Ministry of Justice will monitor cannabis seeds and crops.
President Gustavo Petro has called for a total legalization of cannabis, including for recreational use, arguing that prohibition contributes to violence. This situation has generated tensions with the United States, which has criticized Colombia for drug production.
