Volker Türk, the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, has called for an investigation into the airstrikes carried out by the US against vessels in the Caribbean and Pacific, marking the first official condemnation from a UN organization. Türk's office spokesperson, Ravina Shamdasani, emphasized that these attacks and the associated human cost are unacceptable and that the US must stop extrajudicial killings.
Türk believes that these attacks violate international human rights law. Since the start of the anti-drug campaign in September, the US has conducted 14 strikes, resulting in at least 61 deaths, including a recent strike in the eastern Pacific Ocean that killed everyone on board. Shamdasani noted that the use of lethal force must be a last resort, according to international standards, and that the attacks occur outside of an armed conflict context.
