The Colombian President Gustavo Petro stated that the United States violated the sovereignty of Colombia's territorial waters and killed a fisherman during a military operation in the Caribbean, aimed at combating drug trafficking. Petro emphasized that the fisherman had no links to drug trafficking and that his activity was solely fishing. Since September, the U.S. has conducted a large military operation in the Caribbean, involving seven ships and fighter jets, which has resulted in at least 27 deaths following six attacks. The legality of these actions, carried out in international waters without intercepting or questioning suspects, is contested. Bogotá has criticized the American military deployment, which specifically targets Venezuela, accused of involvement in drug trafficking.
